How should you use this word and what does it mean?
1. Well is used when you need to think for a second before you answer a question. It sounds very natural. You may use a sound or a short word in your native language when you hesitate or take a little time before you answer a question.
Question: Did you finish your work?
Answer: Well... I'm almost finished.
2. Well is an adverb form of good:
She dances well.
He did well in school
3. Sometimes Well goes with an adjective. Common examples are: well known,
well educated, well received, well read
They have studied at good schools and are well educated.
Beyonce is a well-known singer.
The movie was well received. (Many people liked it, especially critics.)
She has many books and is very well read.
NOTE: In this case read is pronounced like the past tense of read. [red]
Notice that before a noun, this adverb/adjective combination has a hyphen or dash. - They are a well-educated family. She is a well-known singer.
4. Well can mean very familiar, or a large amount.
My sister knows me well.
There were well over 1 million people at the protest.
5. ...as well means also.
I cleaned the kitchen today, as well. = I also cleaned the kitchen today.
+ You might be surprised to know that well is also a noun, meaning a deep hole in the ground from which water or oil is brought up.
Saudi Arabia has the most oil wells ln the world.
A long time ago, there was a well in the center of the town, where everyone got water.
We can see that well usually has a positive or good meaning.
